The World According to Anna

The World According to Anna by Jostein Gaarder
My rating: 2 of 5 stars

Jostein Gaarder? What have you done?  I have loved every one of your books so far. I read the ‘Christmas Mystery every year!  I love the way you write.  Then I read this.  Why did you do this to me?  I have to face my friends at school after recommending this book to them.   What am I going to do?

Why is Benjamin, the psychiatrist, so creepy?  Did you mean for him to be a nice guy?  Why does he talk like my Science teacher?  Why are all of the characters so boring?   Where is the magic?

I love that you wrote about such an important issue – but I am so disappointed.  You have screwed up your chance to make a difference.  Don’t you know that we are already sinking under tons of information about the environment?  Don’t you know that we already feel powerless?  I was hoping your book would be different.  I hoped that it would say something positive. I almost laughed at the part when you suggested your solution to the problem of global warming.  I know that you were trying to be ironic here, at least I hope so, but I can’t work it out.  Are you saying that it’s up to everyone to come up with their own solution?  I’m so confused.

You’re book has left me feeling very angry Mr Gaarder.  I know you could have written a better book.   You could have written a classic!   The world needs the book that you could have written.

Go on say something, you know you want to...
