Whilst it is true that the world needs another dystopian novel about as much as it needs a meteorite strike, this is an awesome book. It was a good companion through a long, troubled night. I tried to put it down, but sleep was hard to come by, and I kept on thinking: one more chapter. Around 5:30am I read the final sentence.
The book is highly original and witty and far more than just a satirical take on petty bureaucracy and the abuse of the powerless. The book is the first in a series of one book. The promised sequel, which Fforde clearly has no intention of ever writing, has already scored 4 stars on the Goodreads website. This is all classic Douglas Adams style humour but more subtle and sophisticated. The allusions to the board game Risk and that great fishing masterpiece Catch 22 are brilliant as is the passage explaining how a simple misspelling resulted in head injuries to thousands of children!
This is an awesome book with a clever mix of wordplay, satire and dark comedy. It would be great for study at level 3.
